In 1915, to coincide with Magna Carta’s 700th anniversary, the suffragette campaigner, Helena Normanton (1882–1957), published this essay on ‘Magna Carta and Women’. Appearing in the periodical The Englishwoman, Normanton’s essay argued that the disenfranchisement of women contravened Magna Carta’s famous clauses 39 and 40. Helena Florence Normanton (1882-1957) was born on 14 Dec 1882 to Jane Amelia and William Alexander Normanton in Kensington. In 1886 the family moved to Brighton. From 1900 Helena attended York Place Secondary School, Brighton (later renamed Margaret Hardy School, forerunner of Varndean School for Girls). Helena Normanton worked as a teacher in my hometown of Glasgow, at Glasgow High School for Girls and at Glasgow University. As she worked in Scotland though it is unlikely she was ever a member of the NUWT as there was a separate organisation for Scotland the ‘Women’s Educational Union’.
